FAMILY ACTIVITY WEEKEND - Wanganui is a family friendly city, with plenty to do for all ages.

Wanganui, and requires a car or preferably a bicycle, to get from place to place. (Remember to lock your bike securely wherever you leave it and keep all your belongings, including helmet, with you).

SAMPLE TOURS CAN INCLUDE:


- Weekend Museum Heritage Tour

This tour can be customised to include tours to the Whanganui Regional Museum, as well as other notable museums, private museums and private collections, depending on your interests.


- Weekend Heritage Transport Tour

This tour includes visits to the Whanganui Regional Museum, a visit to the Whanganui Riverboat Centre, a ride on the historic Waimarie Paddle Cruiser, a visit to the Tramways Wanganui Museum and Workshop, a visit to SteamRail Wanganui workshops, a ride in a heritage bus out to Boyds Auto Barn (a private car museum), as well as afternoon tea or an evening meal in one of the beautiful heritage restaurants and cafes of Wanganui. Dining requirements can be arranged to meet your needs.


- One Day Arts Tour

This tour includes visits to local galleries, including the famous Sarjeant Gallery, as well as the Community Arts Centre, McNamara Gallery and Chronicle Glass, a working art glass factory and gallery. Lunch can also be provided at one of the many gallery/cafes located around Wanganui.


- Three Day Whanganui River Tour

Wanganui.com can put you in touch with providers who offer a wide range of river tours. Or we can assist you to arrange a custom tour through an operator who we feel best meets your needs.


- One Day Environmental Tour

This tour shows some of the excellent conservation work being done in our region and includes a visit to Bushy Park, a recognised Nature Reserve and Kiwi Sanctuary. A nature walk through Bushy Park as well as lunch or afternoon tea on the veranda of the historic homestead located in the sanctuary.

FAMILY WEEKEND

Friday
Arrive in evening, eat out at family restaurant or buy take-aways, stay at family friendly accommodation 

Saturday
08.30 - 09.30 Walk to the market along the Whanganui River
walkway. Take some bait and tackle and try a spot of fishing on the way, or stop and watch the locals
09.30 - 10.00 Visit the markets and purchase homemade crafts,
baking and local produce
10.00 - 10.30 Watch the glass blowers at Chronicle Glass on
Rutland St
10.30 - 12.00 Drive along the river, over Dublin St bridge to
Kowhai Park, playground and train
12.00 - 13.00 Lunch in town and shopping on Victoria Ave, or
lunch up at Virginia Lake
13.00 - 14.30 Walk around Virginia Lake, feed the ducks, visit
the aviary
14.30 - 16.30 Choose an option: 

  • Drive to Castlecliff, walk out on the mole, stroll
    along the beach and visit the playground 
  • Drive a short distance out of town to Kai Iwi
    beach and playground 
  • Staying at the river, take a trip on the Waimarie
    Paddle Steamer, and visit the Riverboat Museum  
  • Swim at the Splash Centre for the afternoon 

16.30 – 18.00 Barbecue at the beach, Kowhai Park, or dinner in
town. After dinner, visit Virginia Lake to see the lights at night 

Sunday
09.00 - 10.00 Leave the car at the base of Durie Hill. Kids race
the adults up the steps, then to the top of the Durie Hill Tower!
10.00 - 11.30 Take the Durie Hill Elevator down to your car,
drive to Whanganui Regional Museum
11.30 – 12.00 Visit the Sarjeant Gallery, situated above the
museum in Queens Park
12.00 - 15.30 Take a picnic to Bushy Park, Paloma Gardens or
Bason Botanic Gardens 

(If weather is bad, spend longer at the museum and gallery before departing town, or go swimming at the Splash Centre) 

15.30 Depart Wanganui

CULTURE WEEKEND

Friday
Arrive in evening, eat out in town, stay at local accommodation  

Saturday
08.30 - 09.00 Walk to the local Farmer’s market along the
Whanganui River walkway
09.00 - 10.00 Visit the market and purchase homemade crafts,
baking and local produce
10.00 - 11.00 Whanganui Regional Museum – get an introduction to Wanganui history and the environment
11.00 - 12.00 Shop along Victoria Ave at a range of specialty and other stores
12.00 - 13.00 Lunch at a local café
13.00 - 17.00+ Take a trip up the Whanganui River by river or road, choose your journey:

  • Paddle steamer: Take the Waimarie to Upokongaro and back, CHECK SCHEDULES
  • Jetboat: Book a jetboat trip to the Bridge to Nowhere or other places on the River
  • Drive the Whanganui River Road to Jerusalem (Hiruharama), Pipiriki and Raetihi and then loopp back to Wanganui down the Parapara Scenic Highway.
    Or shoose to overnight at one of the many accomodation options along the river road. Sites to explore include
    the historic Waitaha Pa site, the ‘Gentle Annie’, the Tunnel Culvert, historic Koriniti Marae, Kawana Mill, Jersusalem (Hiruharama) and visit the historic convent established by Mother Aubert, as well as many beautiful river viewpoints and photographic opportunities. Evening – Choose to stay up the River, at the Convent, on a marae or other accommodation, or return to Wanganui for dinner, local theatre, and accommodation in town.

Sunday
9.00 – 10.30 Take an early walk up to the top of Durie Hill Tower for a 360° view of Wanganui
10.30-11.30 Visit the Sarjeant Gallery in Queens Park
11.30-12.30 Lunch at a local café
12.30-15.30 Drive a short distance out of town to a local recreational area, either Bushy Park, Bason Botanic Gardens, Kai Iwi (Mowhanau) beach or stay in town and spend time at Virginia Lake and gardens.
15.30 Depart Wanganui

SPORTS WEEKEND

Friday
Arrive in evening, take a stroll along the river before dinner. Eat
out in town, stay at local accommodation

Saturday
08.00 - 10.00 Casual rowing at Aramoho or Union Rowing Club (book beforehand)
10.00 - 11.00 Into town for breakfast
11.00 - 11.30 Watch glass blowers at Chronicle Glass
11.30 - 14.30 Take a cycle trip, several to choose from:

  • Mountain biking at Hylton Park
  • Mountain biking up River Road
  • Cycle Somme Parade, through Aramoho and Papaiti to the gravel road
  • Cycle to Upokongaro and visit the Waitaha Pa site on the way
  • Mowhanau Beach/Kai Iwi cycle trip – stop at Virginia Lake and gardens on the way there or back

14.30 - 15.30 Late lunch at a local café
15.30 - 16.30 Relax at the Whanganui Regional Museum
16.30 - 18.30 Take a self-guided city walking tour– pick up the
brochure beforehand
18.30 Dinner and accommodation

08.30 - 09.30 Run across the City Bridge to Durie Hill steps, up
Durie Hill steps and to the top of the elevator tower, then the Durie Hill Tower for 360° views and photographs
09.30 - 10.30 Run down to breakfast at a local café
10.30 - 12.00 Play casual tennis or squash at Wanganui Tennis & Squash Club (arrange beforehand)
12.00 - 13.30 Cool down with a swim at the Splash Centre
13.30 - 14.30 Lunch in town, or near the Splash Centre at the Springvale Garden Centre
14.30 - 15.30 Visit Sarjeant Gallery
15.30 Depart Wanganui

13.00 - 15.30 Drive to Bushy Park and experience the beauty of
the natural environment
15.30 - 17.30 Return to town and stroll through Kowhai Park and visit Glen Logie Rose Garden across the road
Evening - Dinner in town, stay in local accommodation

9.00 – 10.00 Take an early walk up to the top of Durie Hill Tower for a 360° view of Wanganui
10.00-11.00 Visit Whanganui Regional Museum
11.00-16.00 Choose your garden visits: Take a picnic to the Bason Botanic Gardens, or check the opening times for: Paloma Gardens, Clovelly, Rosehill, Derrynane, Ohorere or Westernesse.

10.00 - 12.00 Walk the Wanganui City Heritage Walk guided by the brochure

13.00 - 15.00 Walk to Whanganui Regional Museum, the Sarjeant Gallery and around Queenspark
15.00 - 17.30 Experience the heritage of the Old Cemetery either unguided or with the brochure guide
17.30+ Dinner in town, back to accommodation

Sunday
09.00 - 10.00 Walk up to Durie Hill and to the top of the Tower for 360° views and photographs
10.00 - 12.00 Walk along the river bank in either direction, crossing any or all of the four bridges
12.00 - 13.30 Go out of town up to Virginia Lake for lunch, and
walk around the lake and gardens
13.30 - 15.30 Enjoy one of the Wanganui West Heritage Trails (car required) to Bushy Park, Bason Botanic Reserve or Kai
Iwi Beach, walk around the local streets of Wanganui.
15.30+ Depart Wanganui
