About the Region

Whanganui National Park
Our own National Park is an area of great beauty that takes in the famous 'Bridge to Nowhere', the Matemateonga Track and has the mystical Whanganui River flowing through it.

Whakapapa and Turoa Ski Fields
These ski fields are located on adjacent slopes of Mt Ruapehu, offering sweeping 260sc views. The close proximity of these slopes to Wanganui (within 2 hours drive) makes a day of skiing viable from a Wanganui base. Even in summer, it¹s worth riding the ski lifts for the views.

Ruapehu
The Tongariro National Park (Dual World Heritage Area). This awe-inspiring park features the majestic Mt Ruapehu, the park¹s namesake, Tongariro, and Ngauruhoe. It offers excellent short walks and multi-day tramps. The Tongariro Crossing with its milky lakes, and volcanic debris, is considered to be the best one day walk in New Zealand.

Rangitikei
Rangitikei River - From its headwaters in the Kaimanawa Ranges, the mighty Rangitikei River carves through hill country farm land, tall white river cliffs and the steep slopes of the rugged bush-clad Ruahine Ranges. Visitors can easily access the beautiful Rangitikei District by travelling south-east along State Highway 3 towards Bulls then north along State Highway 1.

Taranaki
Egmont National Park - An extensive park which includes Mt Taranaki, Dawson Falls and, for the more experienced skier, the Manganui Ski Field on its eastern slopes. Drive Surf Highway 45 along the coast from Wanganui.
